Narrative Pro Rig: The Complete Cine Build List
Short answer
The pro narrative build costs $21,164.61 complete, built on a Canon EOS C70 at around $3,700 with a five lens Sirui T1.2 set. The money goes into removing friction: built-in ND, dual XLR, multi-motor focus, a 114mm matte box, and two big lights, one of which runs on batteries.
This is a working narrative package at $21,164.61. It is built around the Canon EOS C70 at about $3,700, chosen not for its sensor but for what it removes: built-in ND filters, two full size XLR inputs, and an RF mount that adapts to nearly any glass. Every one of those deletes an accessory, a cable, or a step in a lighting change.
Read the working tier first if you have not. This list is that one with its four real limits removed: the filter workflow, the lens range, the focus system and the size of the light.
Who this build is for
You shoot narrative work for money several times a year, with a crew that includes a focus puller, a gaffer and a sound recordist. You are hired partly because you own equipment other professionals will accept. Your schedule rewards control, and your footage has to cut against material shot on other days in other locations.
Nobody should treat this as an aspirational shopping list. Money spent here before the work exists buys capability that sits in a case. The honest version of the advice: buy the working tier, then spend the difference on lighting, a rehearsal day and paying your crew properly.

Check priceThe Aputure Amaran 300c RGB COB is the mains key: 300 W of full colour, enough to push through a 4x4 diffusion frame and still expose at a working stop. The Aputure Storm 400x V-Mount Monolight is the location light, because it runs from V-mount batteries and that is what makes a big source usable in a field at dusk or a building with no accessible power.
The Westcott Scrim Jim Cine 4x4 Kit is the piece that changes the look. Diffusion on a frame at a distance from the fixture creates a large apparent source, which softens shadow edges and makes falloff gradual. The Aputure Spotlight Mount with 19 Degree Lens is the opposite tool: an optical snoot for hard shaped light and gobo patterns. Owning both is what lets you say yes to a look rather than describing what you would have needed.
Focus, at the level cine glass demands
The Tilta Nucleus-M II Hand Wheel Kit is a multi-channel hand wheel with high torque motors. Torque is the specification that matters, because real cine lenses have deliberate mechanical drag in the focus barrel and a light motor either slips or lags. Multi-channel matters because focus, iris and zoom can all be driven, and on a crewed set they are three different people's decisions.
The 18-inch Flexible Follow Focus Whip is a fifteen dollar item on a twenty thousand dollar list, and it earns its place: on a shoulder build it puts the focus knob where a hand can actually reach.
Filtration at 114mm
The Tilta Mirage Pro 114mm Matte Box has a 114mm backing, which is the size cine glass needs once front diameters pass 95mm. Trying to run a 95mm box on a large prime causes vignetting on the wide end, and the answer is not a smaller filter, it is a bigger box.
The filtration itself becomes a per-scene decision rather than a default. The Tiffen 4x5.65 Black Pro-Mist 1 is a full strength Pro-Mist, a look you choose for a specific scene. The Tiffen 4x5.65 Warm Black Pro-Mist 1 adds warmth with the diffusion, which is useful against cool LED sources and almost impossible to remove in a grade. Both are commitments, and the discipline is to use them deliberately.
Monitoring for a crew
The Blackmagic Video Assist 7-inch 12G is the on-camera monitor and backup recorder, with waveform and vectorscope on screen. The Teradek Bolt 6 LT 750 TX and RX Kit is the wireless link, and it is here for one reason: latency low enough that a focus puller can work off the picture. Cheaper systems are fine for a client watching performance and not fine for someone making focus decisions in real time.
The LILLIPUT H7S 7-inch 1800 nit SDI Monitor at 1800 nits with tally is the village monitor, readable outdoors, showing the crew which camera is rolling.
Sound, and why it is a professional's kit
The Sound Devices MixPre-6 II gives six inputs with preamps a recordist will accept, which matters because on this size of production you are hiring one. The Sennheiser AVX ME2 Lavalier Set self-manages frequencies and plugs directly into an XLR input, which is what survives a location with a crowded RF environment. The Tentacle Sync E MKII (Standard Set) puts timecode on everything, so an edit starts as an assembly.
What you can skip
- The slider, about $900. A slider that travels twice its length is lovely and entirely optional. Most narrative moves are done better on a dolly or a gimbal, or not at all.
- The warm diffusion filter, about $326. Only if your lighting is already warm. It is a strong, hard to reverse choice.
- The second big light, about $1,059. Skip only if every location you shoot has power. Most do not.
What you must not skip
The head. The Sachtler aktiv8 Fluid Head is expensive and it is the item on this list most likely to still be working in twenty years. Sideload balancing means the camera rebalances in seconds between setups, and on a day with fifteen setups that is an hour of schedule. A cheap head under a heavy rig is a slow day, a bad pan, and eventually a dropped camera.

Common questions
- Why a Super 35 documentary-style body on a narrative build?
- Because built-in ND and two XLR inputs remove more friction from a shooting day than a larger sensor adds to the image. The Canon C70 has dual gain output, internal ND and an RF mount that adapts to almost anything, in a body a crew of two can run. Sensor size is the least interesting of those properties.
- Is a five lens set worth the step up from three?
- It is once your coverage includes a genuine wide and a genuine long. Three primes at 24, 35 and 55mm cover most dialogue, but a 16mm changes what a small location can hold and a 75mm changes what a close-up feels like. The set also stays matched, which mixing in a third-party lens does not.
- Why two big lights instead of one bigger one?
- Because one is mains powered and one runs from V-mount batteries, and that division is what lets you light an exterior or a location with no usable power. A 300 W mains fixture through a frame is your key on a stage. A battery capable 400 W class monolight is the one that goes to a field at dusk.
- What does a 4x4 frame actually do?
- It turns a hard source into a soft one at a distance, which is the most useful trick in a lighting kit. Diffusion stretched on a frame between a fixture and a subject creates a large apparent source, so shadows soften and the falloff becomes gradual. It is also what makes a single big light look like a window.
- Is zero delay wireless video worth over $2,000?
- It is if a focus puller works off it. Cheaper systems have enough latency that a pull made against the monitor lands late, so the puller has to work from the lens and the tape marks instead. Zero delay class transmission is the only category where a puller can actually trust the picture, which is what you are buying.
- Who should not buy this build?
- Anyone whose work does not already pay for equipment. This list assumes several paid narrative jobs a year, a crew, and a schedule that rewards control. A beginner spending this money buys capability they cannot yet use, and would get better footage from the working tier plus two more lights and a day of rehearsal.
