What you are actually buying, which is latency

Range is what gets advertised and latency is what decides whether the system is usable. The three jobs wireless video does

Every one of those figures is quoted for clear line of sight with nothing else on the band. A single plasterboard wall roughly halves usable range and a brick one can end it. Treat the quoted number as a best case and assume a third of it indoors, which is still plenty for most work and is the honest basis for a purchase decision.

Power and mounting, which is where these go wrong

A transmitter draws real current, typically 6 to 10 W, and it runs continuously rather than only while recording. Powering it from a small NP-F cell means changing that cell during the day. If the receiver is going to sit within a few metres and nobody is walking around, a cable is more reliable, has zero latency, costs almost nothing and cannot be interfered with. On a locked-off interview with a client sitting beside you, wireless is solving a problem you do not have.

On an SDI camera the argument for cable gets stronger. SDI runs a hundred metres over coax with a locking connector, which covers most of what a mid-range wireless system does, for the price of the cable. This is one of several places where an SDI body quietly saves money that never appears in a camera comparison.

The rule that survives contact with a real shoot: carry the cable even when you use the link. Spectrum at a venue is not something you control, and a wireless system that fails has to fail into something.

What latency do I need for pulling focus wirelessly?
Under about 60 milliseconds, and lower is better. A focus puller is reacting to what the receiver shows, so any delay is added directly to their reaction time. Systems sold for client monitoring often run 150 milliseconds or more, which looks fine to somebody watching and is unworkable for anybody making a real-time adjustment. Check the quoted latency figure, not just the range.
How far do wireless video transmitters really reach?

A single plasterboard wall roughly halves usable range and brick or concrete can end it entirely.
