Narrative Starter Rig: The Complete Cine Build List

This build is for a shot list, a crew of two or three, and takes you can repeat. It costs $3,591.12 complete and starts with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K at about $1,100, which remains the cheapest route into internal BRAW. Everything else on the list buys control: focus that repeats, filtration you choose, and light you brought rather than light you found.

Compare this list against the run and gun starter build, which costs almost the same and shares almost nothing. That is not a quirk of these two lists. The two jobs genuinely invert.

Who this build is for

You are shooting scenes you planned. There is a script, a shot list or at minimum a clear idea of what each shot has to accomplish. Somebody other than you is holding a boom or moving a light. You can ask for another take. Nothing in your day depends on reacting to a moment you did not expect.

If that is not your work, this is the wrong list, and it will feel wrong within an hour of trying to use it. A follow focus and a matte box on a documentary shoot are dead weight, and the body here will fight you the moment a subject moves without warning.

The Tilta Pocket Follow Focus has marked A and B stops and fluid damping. That is the entire technology, and it is enough: you set a start point and an end point, and every take lands the same. Autofocus cannot do this, because it is deciding rather than repeating.

Sound: dual system from day one

The Zoom F3 with the Sennheiser MKE 600 with Shock Mount on a Saramonic BoomPole Lite Carbon Fibre, 8.2 ft is roughly $750 of the budget, which is two thirds of what the camera cost. That ratio is correct and most people get it wrong. Audiences forgive a soft image and will not sit through bad dialogue.

The SmallRig Shotgun Microphone Holder is the cheap part that makes the expensive part work. A microphone bolted straight to a pole records every hand movement of the operator. Isolation is what makes a boom usable at all.

What you can skip

• The diffusion filter, about $106. Defer if the budget is tight. Nothing breaks without it, and it is a look rather than a capability.
• The tripod, about $100. Only if you already own anything with a head that pans smoothly. The legs matter less than the head at this tier.
• The second XLR cable. Skip once, regret once. Cables fail at the connector and they do it mid-take.

What you must not skip

The sandbags and the shock mount. Together they cost under $60 and they prevent the two most common ways a small set goes wrong: a falling stand and unusable dialogue. Everything else on this list is a preference. Those two are not.

Assembly order for a cine build

1. Cage onto the body, checking the battery and card doors still open.
2. Baseplate and rods under the cage. Everything in front of the lens hangs here.
3. Lens on, then the gear ring seated on the focus barrel, not the aperture ring.
4. Follow focus onto the rods, meshed with the gear ring, backlash checked by hand.
5. Matte box onto the clamp or rods, with the filter already in the tray.
6. Monitor last, on a NATO clamp, with the HDMI cable clamped at the cage.

Do the focus gear before the matte box. Reaching past a fitted box to seat a gear ring is how people knock a filter out of a tray onto concrete.
