Three Point Lighting Guide, and Why Negative Fill Comes First
Short answer
Three point lighting means a key light off-axis and slightly above eye level, a fill to control shadow depth, and a back light for separation. The most useful correction to the standard formula is that negative fill, a black surface on the shadow side, shapes a face better than a second light and costs a fraction as much.
Three point lighting is taught as key, fill and back, and the version that produces better images puts a black flag where the second light was meant to go. The key light
The key is the dominant source and it does most of the work. Put it off to one side, roughly 30 to 45 degrees off the lens axis, and slightly above eye level so the shadow of the nose falls downward rather than sideways or upward. That is the whole basic placement, and it looks like natural light from a window or an overhead source, which is why it reads as normal.
Softness comes from the apparent size of the source at the subject, so a large modifier close to the subject is soft and the same modifier far away is not. Buy the largest modifier you can position and move it as close as the frame allows. That is more important than which fixture is behind it.
Height is the variable people get wrong most often. Too low reads as sinister because it inverts the shadow pattern of the sun. Too high puts the eyes in shadow and hollows the sockets. Slightly above eye level, close enough that a catchlight appears in the eye, is the reliable position.
Negative fill before positive fill
The standard formula says to add a fill light on the opposite side to soften the shadows. In most small rooms this produces a flat face lit from both directions, because the room is already bouncing plenty of light back and the fill adds more.
Negative fill is the opposite move: put a black surface on the shadow side to absorb the light the room is bouncing back. The shadow deepens, the face gains dimension, and nothing has been added to the frame. The rule that follows: shape the shadow side before you light it. If the shadows are too deep after that, then add a fill, at a fraction of the key's intensity and from close to the lens axis so it does not create a second shadow.
The back light, which is really separation
A back light sits behind and above the subject, out of frame, and puts a rim of light on the hair and shoulders. Its job is to separate the subject from the background so the image reads as having depth rather than as a person pasted onto a wall.
It wants to be small, controllable and often quite hard, which is the opposite of the key. The alternative that often looks better is lighting the background instead of rimming the subject. A background that is brighter or darker than the subject separates them just as effectively and looks less like a lighting setup. This is the first genuinely useful place for an RGB fixture in a kit.

- Turn everything off, including practicals, and look at what the room gives you. Ambient light is a source and you have to know what it is doing.
- Place the key, off-axis and slightly high, through the largest modifier you can position close.
- Set exposure on skin using false colour, with the key alone.
- Add negative fill on the shadow side and judge the face again. Often this is where you stop.
- Add positive fill only if the shadows are still too deep, from near the lens axis at a low level.
- Separate the subject from the background, either with a back light or by lighting the background.
- Add practicals in frame last. They sell the scene as a real place more than correct exposure does.
Step one is the one professionals do and beginners skip. Turning everything off and looking at the ambient light tells you what you are adding to, and a lot of the best lighting on location is adding one source to existing light rather than overwriting it.

That bottom row is the one worth trying first. A single soft key with a black flag opposite produces more dimensional lighting than most three light setups, and it is faster to set up, cheaper to own and much easier to keep consistent across a shooting day.
Colour, and matching what is already there
Mixed colour temperature is what makes location footage look wrong in a way people struggle to name. Daylight through a window is around 5600 K, a domestic tungsten lamp is around 2700 K, and a fixture set between them makes both look incorrect.
The fix is to pick one and commit. Either gel or set your fixture to match the dominant existing source, or overpower the existing light entirely so yours is dominant. A bi-colour fixture makes the first option quick, which is most of why bi-colour is worth its output penalty on location.
Colour accuracy of the fixture itself matters too. Look for CRI 95 and TLCI 95 or above, because a cheap emitter has gaps in its spectrum and skin goes green or magenta in a way white balance cannot correct. That is a spectral deficiency rather than a cast, and no grade fixes it cleanly.
