Two ladders, because camera rigs have two buyers and the advice inverts

A solo documentary shooter and a narrative crew both build camera rigs, and almost every decision they make points the opposite way. Averaging the two produces a rig that is slow for one and imprecise for the other, so this site keeps them apart. Six complete builds, every line item priced and linked, every total stated.

Which ladder are you on?

The test is not what you shoot, it is whether you control what happens next. If the subject decides, you are on the run and gun ladder. If you decide, you are on the narrative ladder. Most people know which one they are within about ten seconds, and the people who genuinely do both should build the run and gun kit first: it survives on a narrative set as a second camera, while narrative gear is dead weight on a documentary day.

How these lists are put together

Every line item is a real product with a real price recorded while researching, and every one is linked. Prices move constantly on Amazon, so the totals here are for budgeting and the link is always the authority. Where a category has genuinely better options at a different price, the matching roundup is linked from the build row so you can compare without leaving the plan.

The rule for inclusion is simple: if a line item does not prevent a specific failure on a shoot, it is not on the list. That is why the starter builds contain no gimbal and no matte box, and why the pro builds contain a support vest and a timecode kit rather than a bigger camera.

The three items that appear on every list

Across all six builds, three purchases show up every time, and they cost under $90 together: Gaffer Power Black Gaffer Tape, 2 inch for marks and cable dressing, a way to power the accessories, and a monitor mount that puts the screen on a rail rather than a cold shoe. None of them are exciting and all of them are load bearing.

The fourth near-universal item is a SmallRig Lightweight NATO Top Handle. A NATO handle comes off in one motion without tools, which is the difference between a rig that packs into a bag and one that fights you at the end of a long day.

How to stage the purchase

Almost nobody buys a build list in one order, and nobody should. The sequence that works, on either ladder, is to buy in the order that removes failures rather than the order that adds capability.

  1. The body and one lens. Nothing else can be evaluated until you know what you are rigging. Buy the cheapest body that shoots the picture profile you need and put the rest of the budget into the list below.
  2. Exposure judgement. A monitor with false colour on the run and gun path, a monitor plus a filter tray on the narrative path. Footage that is two stops under is unrecoverable, and a rear screen showing a log image will not warn you.
  3. Sound. A microphone and, as soon as you can afford it, a separate recorder. Audiences forgive a soft image and stop watching over bad dialogue.
  4. Power. One battery system that runs the camera and the accessories, so the day ends when you decide it does.
  5. Media, twice. Two cards and two copies. A card is not a backup, and formatting in the field to make room is how footage disappears.
  6. Movement or control. The gimbal on one ladder, the follow focus and matte box on the other. This comes sixth, not first, on both.

The mistake this ordering prevents is the most common one in the whole hobby: buying the visible items first. A gimbal, a matte box and a shoulder rig all look like a real rig in a photograph and none of them fix exposure, sound or power. What these builds cost to run, not just to buy

A build list is a capital number and a rig also has a running cost, which almost nobody budgets for. Three real ones:

  • Storage. A RAW or high bitrate workflow generates hundreds of gigabytes per shoot day. At the working tier that is a new drive every few months, and archive storage that grows forever. Get your own number from the storage per hour calculator before you commit to a codec.
  • Batteries. Lithium cells lose capacity with cycles, and a three-year-old battery that reads full will not run a light at full output. Budget for replacement rather than being surprised by it.
  • Consumables and small failures. Gaffer tape, cables, gear rings, the odd dropped filter. On a working kit this is a real annual line, and cables are the single most frequent failure in any rig.

Buying used, and where not to

Rigging is the best used purchase in this niche. A cage, a baseplate, rods, a cheese plate and a magic arm are machined aluminium with no electronics, and a scratched one performs identically to a new one. The same applies to stands, apple boxes and hard cases.

Be far more careful with three categories. Batteries, because you cannot see cycle count and a tired cell is a shoot that ends early. Variable ND filters, because polarisers can be scratched between the layers where you will not spot it until you see the footage. And motorised items with a duty cycle, including gimbals and wireless focus motors, where wear is real and invisible.

Where the two ladders overlap

About a third of each list is shared. Sound is nearly identical: a boom, a shock mount, cables and a recorder do the same job on both paths. Media, offload drives and power are the same problem with the same answers. Rigging hardware crosses over completely, and a NATO handle bought for a documentary rig will still be on a narrative build years later.

What does not cross over is the front of the lens and the way the camera moves. Those are the two places where the buyers genuinely diverge, and they are the two places where following the wrong list wastes the most money.

Before you buy anything

Run three numbers first. The gimbal payload check tells you whether the stabiliser you were about to buy can carry the rig you already own. The storage per hour figure tells you how many cards a shoot day needs. The battery runtime figure tells you whether one cell covers your load. Those three answers change build decisions more often than any review does.
