Run and Gun Starter Rig: The Complete Build List

Short answer

A complete starter run and gun rig costs $3,720.60 including the camera and lens: a Sony FX30 body, a Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8, a half cage with an HDMI clamp, a false colour monitor, a variable ND, two audio sources, and enough power and media to finish a day. No gimbal, no matte box, no follow focus.

This is the smallest rig that can genuinely cover a run and gun job: one operator, an unpredictable subject and no second take. The whole build is $3,720.60, and it starts with the Sony FX30 at about $1,800, which is the cheapest body that gives you a cine picture profile, a detachable XLR handle in the box, and the same cage ecosystem you will still be using three cameras from now.

Everything else on this list exists to solve one specific failure mode. Not to make the rig look like a rig. If a line item here does not stop something going wrong on a shoot, it is not on the list.

Who this build is for

You are working alone, or with one other person who is not a camera assistant. The subject decides what happens next, not you. You will hand over a finished piece where the sound has to be clean and the exposure has to hold while a person walks from a window into a hallway. You do not get to relight, and you frequently do not get to ask for a second take.

If instead you are shooting a planned scene from a shot list, with a crew and repeatable takes, stop here and read the narrative starter build instead. That path spends the same money on manual control and lighting rather than on speed, and following this list would leave you with the wrong tools.

The honest version: a run and gun kit is a compromise machine. Every item is chosen because it fails gracefully when you are rushed. That is a different goal from making the best possible image, and mixing the two goals is how people end up carrying twelve kilos of gear they never deploy.

What you can skip, and what it costs you

Telling you what not to buy is the most useful thing on this page, so here is the short version of everything a starter rig is usually sold and does not need.

The one thing on that list worth reconsidering early is the gimbal, and only if the work you are being paid for is explicitly movement led. Check the numbers on the gimbal payload calculator before you buy, because this body with the zoom fitted sits close enough to the 2 kg class limit that a smaller gimbal would be the wrong purchase.

What to upgrade first

  1. Power, at about $255. A SmallRig VB99 Mini V-Mount, 99Wh, a SmallRig Foldable V-Mount Battery Plate and a SmallRig NP-FZ100 D-Tap Dummy Battery turn the rig into something that runs all day from one cell. This removes both common shoot-enders at once. It is the first real upgrade, ahead of any optical purchase.
  2. A separate audio recorder, about $300. The Zoom F3 records 32-bit float with no gain to set, which removes the single most common way location sound gets destroyed. Once you have it, the camera's audio becomes a backup rather than the master.
  3. A brighter monitor, about $170. The FEELWORLD F5 Prox 5.5-inch at 1600 nits is usable in conditions where a 1000 nit panel is a mirror. Only worth it once you are shooting outdoors regularly.

The weight, and why it matters

This build is deliberately light. The body is a compact Super 35 chassis, the zoom is a small APS-C design, and the cage is a half cage rather than a full one. The whole camera assembly with monitor, microphone and card sits comfortably in the range where a 3 kg rated gimbal would have real headroom later, which is exactly why the lens choice matters more than it looks.

Weight compounds. Every accessory adds mass out in front of your hands, and mass in front of the grip is a lever. A rig that weighs a kilo more is not fractionally harder to hold, it is disproportionately harder, because the leverage grows with the distance. Power planning at this tier

You have two power systems here and they are separate on purpose. The camera runs on its internal battery. The monitor runs on NP-F cells from the NEEWER NP-F970 Two-Battery Kit with Charger. Keeping them separate at the starter tier means no cables between the two, no D-Tap adapter to lose, and no single point of failure.

The cost is that you now carry two charger types. That is a real annoyance and it is the reason the first upgrade above is a V-mount. Run the numbers on the battery runtime calculator with your actual monitor and camera draw before deciding whether a single 99 Wh cell would replace both.

Media planning at this tier

A CFexpress Type A card is the expensive part of the Sony cine line, and there is no way around it if you want the highest bitrate modes. The Lexar 256GB CFexpress Type A Silver 4.0 gets you there for roughly half the price per gigabyte of the first party card, and 256 GB is a sensible working size: big enough for most days, small enough that losing one is not catastrophic.

Work out your own numbers on the storage per hour calculator. A 240 Mbps codec consumes 108 GB per hour, which means a 256 GB card holds roughly two hours and twenty minutes of continuous recording. An interview day with two cameras eats that faster than most people expect.

The Samsung T9 1TB Portable SSD is on the list for one reason: a card is not a backup. Offload every night, keep the card until the project is delivered, and never format a card in the field to make room.

Assembly order

Build the rig in this order and it goes together without fighting itself:

  1. Cage onto the body, with the camera's own battery door checked for clearance.
  2. Top handle onto the NATO rail, tightened with the lever rather than a tool.
  3. Monitor mount onto the rail next to the handle, not on the cold shoe.
  4. Monitor on the mount, then the HDMI cable, then the cable clamp closed on it.
  5. Microphone into the XLR handle or the cold shoe, whichever your audio plan uses.
  6. Variable ND onto the lens last, so nothing is cross-threaded while you rush.

The cable clamp step is the one people skip and then regret. An unclamped HDMI cable puts every snag straight into a micro connector soldered to a board.

Why this is not the narrative starter build

The narrative starter costs almost exactly the same and shares almost nothing. It buys a body with internal raw recording, a manual prime, a follow focus, a matte box, a light and a stand. It has no gimbal, no autofocus lens and no wireless microphone. Both lists are correct, for different jobs.

If you genuinely do both kinds of work, build this one first. Run and gun gear survives on a narrative set as a second camera, but narrative gear does not survive a run and gun day: a follow focus and a matte box are dead weight when the subject moves before you do.

Full frame buys about a stop of low light performance and a shallower look, neither of which fixes bad audio or a drifting exposure.
Can I use SD cards instead of CFexpress Type A?
Yes for most modes, no for the highest bitrate ones. The camera takes both in the same dual slots, and a fast V90 SD card handles ordinary 4K recording. The Type A card is what unlocks the top intraframe modes. Start with SD if the budget is tight, and add a Type A card when you find a mode you actually want that SD cannot sustain.
Is a field monitor worth it before a better lens?
Yes. A monitor with false colour tells you the exposure is right; a sharper lens tells you nothing. Log footage on a rear screen looks flat and pale, and judging it by eye is how run and gun shooters end up two stops under. A $110 monitor with false colour prevents a whole class of unrecoverable footage, and no lens does that.
What should I add first once this build is working?
A V-mount battery and plate, so one cell powers the camera, the monitor and anything else you add later. It removes the two most common shoot-enders at once: a flat camera battery and a dead monitor. After that, a separate audio recorder, then a gimbal only if the work you are being asked for actually calls for movement.
