Gear roundups
Every category, three tiers, and an honest note on when to skip it
Cages, gimbals, monitors, recorders, lenses, filters, matte boxes, power, media, audio and lighting. Each roundup names a winner with its price in the first paragraph, splits the picks into starter, working and expert tiers, and says plainly who should not buy the category at all.

How every roundup on this site is structured
Three tiers, always, because that is how people actually shop. At the starter tier you are buying the capability at all. In the middle you are buying the version that does not annoy you. At the top you are buying a system that fits the rest of your kit. Presenting one flat list forces a reader to work out which tier they are in, and most of them will not bother.
Every pick carries a real price recorded while researching and a working link, and every product named in the prose is clickable. A product name rendered as plain text is a lost sale, and it has shipped broken on sibling sites before, so it is checked automatically before every deploy.
Each page also states plainly who should not buy the category at all. That is usually the most useful paragraph on it, and it is the one a manufacturer would never write.
What we do not do
We do not claim to have had every one of these products in our hands. Picks come from published manufacturer specifications, stated load and power ratings, mounting standards documentation, and verified owner reviews describing long-term use. Any site claiming hands-on testing of forty camera cages is telling you a story.
What that leaves is reading specifications carefully and saying which numbers actually change how a piece of gear behaves on a rig. A rated gimbal payload is a torque limit at perfect balance, not a comfortable operating point. A quoted monitor brightness is measured at full backlight with no hood. Those distinctions are where the useful advice lives.
We also do not pretend that the most expensive option is the right one. Several roundups here recommend a $59 part over a $899 one, because the expensive version buys a capability that most readers have no use for.
The order to buy in
Roundups sell one item. A complete build sells the whole rig, and the order matters more than any individual pick. After a body and a lens, buy exposure judgement, then sound, then power, then media in duplicate, and only then movement or manual focus control.
That ordering exists because only a handful of failures actually destroy footage: two stops underexposed, unintelligible dialogue, a flat battery, a full or corrupt card. Everything else produces material that is worse than you wanted and still cuts. Buying against that list rather than against a wishlist is the single most useful habit in this hobby.
The two complete build ladders on this site follow exactly that order at three budgets each, with every line item priced and linked. If you would rather have the finished list than the reasoning, start there.
Where prices come from
Every price on this site is the figure recorded while researching, kept so that a build total means something for budgeting. Prices on Amazon move constantly, so the link is always the authority and the number here is a planning figure.
That is also why totals are stated on build pages rather than hidden. A reader deciding between two tiers needs to know that one is $3,700 and the other is $11,600, and rounding that into "affordable" and "professional" helps nobody.
