When you do not need timecode

Single camera with in-camera audio needs nothing. Picture and sound came from the same clock and are already locked. This covers a large fraction of solo work, and buying timecode for it is spending money on a problem you do not have.

Short takes with dual-system sound often do not need it either. Modern editing software syncs by audio waveform, matching the scratch track from the camera against the good recording, and it is accurate and free. On takes under a few minutes this is genuinely sufficient.

Timecode becomes worth its price at three thresholds: long takes where drift accumulates, multiple cameras that must cut together, and any shoot where the volume of material makes manual syncing a significant part of the schedule.
