Rigging a Follow Focus: Rods, Gear Rings and Backlash

Short answer

A follow focus is rigged by matching the wheel gear to the lens gear at the correct rod height, eliminating backlash by ensuring the gears mesh without play, and setting mechanical end stops before any motor is engaged. A follow focus that is set up badly is worse than no follow focus, because it introduces play into a system whose entire purpose is repeatability. Rods, height and the lens centreline

Fifteen millimetre lightweight rods sit at 60mm centres below the lens, and the height of those rods relative to the lens axis is a standard: 85mm from the base of the camera on most systems. That standard exists so that a matte box, a follow focus and a lens support all line up on any camera without adjustment.

If your baseplate has an adjustable rod height, set it to the standard rather than to what looks convenient, because every accessory you buy later assumes it. Gear rings and 0.8 MOD

MOD, short for module, is a measure of gear tooth size, and 0.8 MOD is the cine standard. Every follow focus drive gear and every cine lens focus gear uses it, which is why any follow focus works with any cine lens.

Stills lenses have a rubber grip and no teeth, so they need a snap-on gear ring: a rubber-backed toothed band that clamps around the focus ring. Fit the ring so it sits fully on the focus ring and not overlapping the barrel edge, and check that it drives the focus through the entire range without creeping. A ring that slips at one end of the travel will slip in the take, and it will slip at the moment the pull is fastest.

Backlash, which is the enemy

Backlash is the small amount of free movement between two meshed gears before the driven one starts to turn. In a follow focus it shows up as a dead zone when you reverse direction: the wheel moves, the lens does not, and then it catches up abruptly.

On a pull that only goes one way, backlash is invisible. On a rack that goes out and back, it puts a hesitation exactly at the reversal, which is usually the moment the shot depends on. This is the mechanical reason cheap follow focus units feel imprecise even when nothing is obviously wrong.

Reduce it by meshing the gears closer, so the follow focus clamp is positioned to engage deeply rather than just barely. Some units have an adjustable gear position for exactly this. Do not force it: gears meshed too tightly bind, and binding produces a stiff wheel and eventually a stripped tooth on the softer of the two gears.

The order matters. Mechanical stops first, because a motor that does not know where the lens ends will drive into the stop and either stall or damage the focus mechanism. Then calibration, which is the motor learning the travel between those stops. Then the A and B marks for the specific shot, which sit inside the mechanical limits.

Lens support, and when you need it

A wireless system replaces the wheel with a motor on the rods and a hand unit elsewhere. The motor has to overcome the resistance of the lens barrel, and cine lenses are deliberately stiff so a hand can make fine adjustments without overshooting.

A setup checklist

  1. Set rod height to the standard for your system, not to whatever looks convenient.
  2. Fit the gear ring fully on the focus ring, and check it drives the full travel without creeping.
  3. Slide the follow focus along the rods until the gears mesh across their full width.
  4. Check for backlash by reversing direction slowly. Reduce the gap if there is a dead zone.
  5. Set mechanical end stops at infinity and minimum focus.
  6. Calibrate the motor if the system has one, after the stops are set.
  7. Fit a lens support on anything over about 700 g.
  8. Position the wheel or whip where the operator's hand rests naturally.
