Focus Pulling Guide: Marks, Rehearsal and Where to Look

Short answer

Reliable focus pulling comes from marks and rehearsal, not from reflexes. Mark the two or three distances that matter with a wax pencil on the follow focus disc, mark the actor positions on the floor with tape, rehearse the pull at speed three times, and watch the actor rather than the monitor during the take.

Focus pulling looks like a reflex skill and is almost entirely preparation. Marks on the disc, marks on the floor, a rehearsal at speed, and then a take where you are watching the actor rather than the screen. Why manual focus at all

Autofocus decides. That is its function and it is the reason it cannot be used for scripted work. A shot may require focus to sit on a background while a face is in frame, or to rack at an exact word in a line, or to hold on an empty doorway before anybody arrives. A system choosing its own subject cannot do any of that.

Manual focus with marks is also repeatable. Take four has to match take one, because they will be cut together, and a system that focuses slightly differently each time produces takes that do not intercut cleanly. A marked pull is identical every time by construction.

This is the same divide that runs through the whole site. Reactive documentary work should use autofocus deliberately and enthusiastically. Scripted work should use marks. Neither is a compromise.

Marking, in order

  1. Block the scene with the actors and find the two or three positions where they stop or where focus must change.
  2. Mark those positions on the floor with a T or a triangle of Gaffer Power Black Gaffer Tape, 2 inch, with the point where their toes go.
  3. Measure from the sensor plane, not from the front of the lens. Most cameras have a marked sensor plane symbol on the body.
  4. Set focus at each marked distance and mark the follow focus disc with a wax pencil, labelling each one.
  5. Set the A and B hard stops at the extremes of the actual move, so the pull cannot overrun.
  6. Rehearse the full pull at performance speed three times before rolling.

Measuring from the sensor plane is the step that produces mysterious soft footage when it is skipped. Lens distance scales are calibrated from the sensor, and measuring from the front element on a long lens can be off by fifteen centimetres, which at f/1.4 on a close subject is the entire depth of field.

Depth of field is your margin for error

The depth of field is how much of the shot is acceptably sharp, and it is your entire tolerance. At f/1.4 on a full frame sensor with a 50mm lens focused at two metres, that tolerance is a matter of centimetres. At f/4 in the same setup it is a comfortable margin. This is a creative decision with a direct operational cost.

The three variables are aperture, focal length and distance. Wider aperture, longer lens and closer subject all reduce depth of field. The one that surprises people is distance: the same lens and aperture at five metres has several times the depth of field it has at two.

Run your specific numbers on the depth of field calculator before a difficult scene rather than after. If the answer is a few centimetres and the actor is walking, the honest options are to stop down, to light the scene enough to allow it, or to accept that some takes will be soft.

Watch the actor, not the monitor

The instinct is to stare at the monitor and correct what you see. That is a feedback loop with your own reaction time built into it, so you are always correcting an error that has already happened, and the result is the visible hunting that identifies an inexperienced pull.

Experienced pullers watch the subject and move the wheel to the mark. The monitor becomes a confirmation glance rather than the control input. This is why marks matter so much: they replace visual feedback with a physical position you can reach without looking.

On a wireless system the argument is even stronger, because the link adds latency to the feedback loop. A system quoting 60 milliseconds plus your own reaction time is a substantial delay, and the only way to be ahead of it is to know where the wheel is going before the actor gets there.

Rigging the wheel where it belongs

Rehearse with the aperture you will shoot at. Rehearsing at f/8 with the lights up and then shooting at f/1.8 means rehearsing with a margin you will not have, and every mark will feel harder in the take than it did in rehearsal.

And rehearse the recovery. Decide in advance what you do if a pull goes wrong halfway: whether you continue to the mark and let the correction be visible, or hold and let the shot be soft. A deliberate choice looks better than a panicked one and it stops a mistake becoming two.
