Sony FX3 vs FX30: The Same Camera at Two Sensor Sizes
Short answer
The FX3 and FX30 share the body, the cooling, the XLR handle and the entire cage ecosystem. The difference is the sensor: full frame against Super 35, for roughly twice the price. The FX30 at around $1,798 is the better buy for most people, because the saved money plus cheaper lenses funds a complete lighting and sound kit.
These two are the clearest illustration in the whole market of what sensor size costs. The Sony FX30 at around $1,798 and the Sony FX3 at $4,298 share the chassis, the cooling, the handle, the media format and every cage, and they differ in the sensor and roughly $2,500. Whether that gap is worth it comes down to one stop of low light and how shallow you need the focus plane.
What they share
Almost everything. The same compact chassis with ARRI-standard 3/8-16 mounting points machined into the body, active cooling that allows genuinely long takes, a detachable XLR audio handle in the box giving two channels of proper input, dual card slots taking CFexpress Type A or SD, and the same E mount.
Because the bodies are dimensionally near identical, the entire cage ecosystem is shared. The FX3's low light performance is unusually good even for full frame, because 12 megapixels across a full frame sensor means very large photosites. That is a genuine advantage in dark interiors and it is the single strongest argument for the more expensive body.
The lens cost, which is the real gap
On the FX30, a Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN at around $550 is a constant f/2.8 zoom weighing under 300 g that covers the sensor completely. On the FX3, the equivalent is a Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II at $2,448 and roughly three times the weight.
The cine glass difference is larger still. A Sirui Night Walker S35 T1.2 Cine Set (24, 35, 55mm) set of three T1.2 primes at around $749 covers Super 35 and works natively on the FX30. On the FX3 those lenses require a crop mode, and full frame cine sets at that price do not exist.
Add the body difference to the lens difference and a complete FX3 kit runs several thousand dollars above a complete FX30 kit at the same capability level. That money spent on a light, a recorder, a decent tripod and a second card is a substantially more capable production kit.

Where the FX3 earns its price
Very low light without added lighting. Twelve megapixels on a full frame sensor produces large photosites and genuinely exceptional high ISO performance, which matters for documentary work in real interiors at night where you cannot add light.
A specific shallow look at a normal focal length. If very shallow depth of field at 50mm equivalent is the visual signature of your work, full frame delivers it more easily, and no amount of technique on Super 35 fully substitutes.
Wide angle work in tight spaces, where Super 35 requires a very short focal length and short lenses get expensive and distorted quickly. Full frame reaches the same field of view with a more conventional lens.
Where the FX30 is simply the better buy
- Any first serious kit, because the saved money funds lighting, sound and support that change every shot.
- Narrative work with a matched prime set, because affordable matched cine sets cover Super 35 and not full frame.
- Gimbal work, because smaller lenses mean a lighter rig and more payload headroom.
- Documentary work in daylight and lit interiors, where the one stop advantage never comes into play.
- Anybody who might sell the camera on, since the smaller loss on a cheaper body reduces the cost of changing your mind.
- A second camera alongside an FX3, since the footage intercuts and the rigging is shared.
That last case is worth noting for anybody already committed to full frame. An FX30 as a B camera to an FX3 is unusually painless: same menus, same profiles, same media, same cages, and footage that matches with minimal work.
What both bodies still need
A monitor with false colour, because both shoot log and neither rear screen lets you judge it. This is the first purchase after the body on either.
Media planning. Both use CFexpress Type A, which carries a real premium per gigabyte because the market is small. Both also take SD in the same slots, so starting on a fast V90 SD card and adding a Lexar 256GB CFexpress Type A Silver 4.0 later is the sensible way to spread the cost.
