Full Frame vs Super 35 for Video: What the Sensor Size Actually Buys
Short answer
Full frame buys roughly one stop of low light performance and a shallower depth of field at the same field of view. Super 35 is the classic cinema frame, uses smaller and cheaper lenses, and is what most affordable cine glass covers. Neither is a quality difference, and a well lit Super 35 image beats a poorly lit full frame one every time.
Sensor size is sold as a quality tier and it is a look and a cost decision. The Sony FX30 at around $1,798 and the Sony FX3 at $4,298 are the clearest illustration: near identical bodies, near identical rigging, and a gap that is mostly sensor. What that gap buys is about a stop of low light and a shallower focus plane, and what it costs is money that could have been lighting.
What the difference actually is
A full frame sensor is roughly 36 by 24 mm. Super 35 is roughly 24 by 14 mm, a crop factor of about 1.5. That means a given lens shows a narrower field of view on Super 35, so a 35mm lens frames like a 50mm on full frame.
For the same framing, you either use a shorter lens on the smaller sensor or step further back. Using a shorter lens at the same aperture gives you more depth of field, which is the actual difference people notice. A 35mm at f/2 on Super 35 has meaningfully more depth of field than a 50mm at f/2 on full frame framed identically.
The low light difference comes from photosite area. A larger sensor collects more light for the same exposure settings, and the practical result is roughly one stop of usable ISO. That is real and it is one stop, not the transformative gap the marketing implies.

The depth of field row is listed as an advantage for both, deliberately. Shallower is not automatically better: on full frame at f/1.8 the focus plane is thin enough that a subject leaning forward goes soft, which is a working problem rather than an aesthetic one. Many documentary shooters on full frame stop down to f/4, which is close to what Super 35 gives wide open.
The lens cost, which dominates

The full frame equivalent, a Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II at $2,448, is four times the price and roughly three times the weight, and that weight lands on your gimbal payload as well as on your shoulder.
Add the body difference and the total gap between a full frame and a Super 35 kit at the same feature level is easily several thousand dollars. That money spent on lighting, sound and support changes the image more than one stop of sensor performance does.

Very low light without added lighting. A documentary shooter working in real interiors at night, unable to add light, gets a real benefit from a stop. That is a genuine and narrow case, and it describes a lot of actual documentary work.
Wide angle work in tight spaces. On Super 35, a very wide field of view means a very short focal length, and lenses shorter than about 12mm are expensive and often distorted. Full frame reaches the same field of view with a more conventional lens.
A specific contemporary look. Very shallow depth of field at a normal focal length reads as modern and expensive, and it is genuinely harder to achieve on a smaller sensor. If that look is the point of the work, full frame is the tool.

- Internal ND on several Super 35 bodies, which is worth more on a real shoot than a stop of sensor.
That last point is underrated. The Canon EOS C70 is Super 35 and has ten stops of internal ND, which removes a filter purchase, a rigging problem and a source of vignetting. On outdoor work that feature does more for a shoot than the sensor difference does.
The verdict
For a first serious kit, Super 35, and spend the difference on lighting and sound. A well lit Super 35 image beats a poorly lit full frame one on every single shot, and the gap between the two sensor formats is one stop rather than a category.
For documentary work in uncontrollable low light, full frame, because the stop is genuinely useful when you cannot add light. This is the strongest case for the format and it is narrower than the marketing suggests.
For narrative work with a matched prime set, Super 35, unless the budget is large enough that full frame cine glass is realistic. The availability of affordable matched sets is a bigger practical advantage than the sensor difference is a disadvantage.
