Wireless Mic System vs Recorder and Lav (2026)

Short answer

A wireless system gives you audio in camera, monitored live, with nothing to sync. A recorder and wired lav gives you a cable that cannot drop out and a file that cannot be ruined by interference, at the cost of syncing every clip in post. For interviews with one or two people and a laptop workflow, either works. For run and gun where you cannot reshoot, the wireless system wins because you can hear a problem while it is happening.

Common questions

Do I still need a clap if I use a wireless system?
Not for the wireless audio itself, since it is recorded into the camera file. Clap anyway if you are also recording a backup on the transmitter or a second device, because that gives you a visual reference to align the backup if you ever need it. It costs a second per take.
Is 32-bit float recording actually useful?
Yes, for one specific problem. It captures a range wide enough that a level set too low or too high can be recovered in software without the distortion you would get from a clipped 24-bit file. It does not fix a bad microphone position, wind noise or a room with hard walls, which are the problems that actually ruin most interviews.
How many wireless channels can I run at once?
It depends on the system and the band it uses, and the honest answer is fewer than the maximum in a crowded room. Two transmitters to one receiver is common and reliable. Beyond that, check whether the system supports it, and expect range to fall as the number of active links and nearby transmitters rises.
Where should a lav be placed?
About a hand width below the chin, centred, on the outside of clothing where possible and clipped so nothing rubs it. Move it off-centre if the subject will turn their head one way, and never let a collar, scarf or lanyard touch the capsule. Placement matters more to the result than the price of the microphone.
