Matte Box vs Screw-In Filters (2026)
Short answer
Screw-in filters are cheaper and smaller until you own more than about two lens diameters, at which point you are buying the same filter several times or fighting step rings. A matte box moves the cost to a one-time frame plus one set of rectangular filters that fits everything, and adds flag control that screw-ins cannot provide. Below three lenses, screw in. Above that, the matte box is usually the cheaper answer as well as the better one.

You shoot with several lenses, you shoot outdoors into changing light, or you need to change filtration quickly between setups. A tray slides out in a second where a screw-in has to come off the front element and go back in a pouch, and the top flag kills the off-axis light that causes most veiling flare.
Check clearance before you buy. A clamp-on box has to clear the lens hood diameter and must not intrude on the frame at your widest focal length, so test your widest lens at your widest aspect ratio and look at the corners. On a lightweight rig, also account for the weight hanging in front of the lens mount, which is exactly the wrong place for it on a gimbal.

Watch for two known problems. Stacking step rings and filters on a wide lens causes mechanical vignetting in the corners, and cheap variable NDs produce a dark cross at their strongest settings because they are two polarisers rotating against each other. - Do I need a matte box if I already have a lens hood?
- Not for basic hood duty, no. What a matte box adds beyond a hood is adjustable flagging, which you can angle to block a specific light source rather than accepting a fixed shape, plus the filter trays. If you never shoot into practical lights or a low sun, a hood and screw-in filters may be all you need.
- What size rectangular filters should I buy?
- 4 by 5.65 inches is the common cine standard and fits most matte boxes, while 4 by 4 is the smaller and cheaper option that can vignette on very wide lenses. Pick the size your matte box takes and stay with it, because filters are the expensive part and they outlive the box.
- Why does my variable ND show a dark X?
- Because a variable ND is two polarising layers rotating relative to each other, and at high densities the polarisation angle across the frame is no longer uniform, particularly on wide lenses. Staying within the marked range helps, and a two to five stop unit will usually stay clean where a two to nine stop unit will not.
- Can I use a matte box on a gimbal?
- You can, but weigh the whole assembly first and rebalance. A matte box puts its mass at the far end of the longest lever on the rig, so it eats into payload disproportionately and makes the front axis harder to balance. Many gimbal operators use screw-in filters for exactly this reason and save the matte box for tripod work.
